About Mariebergsskogen
“If, after my death, Mariebergsskogen is to be sold, do not let the forest come under the lumberjack's saw. Instead, donate it to the city in return for guarantees on its future condition and care. This is my dearest wish.” Conrad Höök, Marieberg, 3 May 1892
The donation to the City of Karlstad was made after Conrad Höök's death in 1895. His appeal has been followed over the years, with the town standing firmly by its promise and allowing Mariebergsskogen to retain its unique character.
As Karlstad's city park, Mariebergsskogen is a popular spot for hundreds of thousands of visitors – a green open space right next to the city centre and a much-visited attraction. The keywords for the park are Nature and Culture, with a special focus on children. The park is open all year round. As the gateway to Värmland, Mariebergsskogen aims to inspire visitors to venture out and explore more of Värmland's countryside and cultural heritage.
Mariebergsskogen is a huge classroom, where play is what really counts. Lillskogen is the place to meet Swedish farm animals, while Naturum Värmland tells the tale of Värmland's natural wonders. The buildings of the open-air museum show life in Värmland as it once was. The historic open-air theatre from 1943 offers music, drama and comedy in the summer. A cool and inviting Fun Garden is now springing up. In the city park, you can swim, ice skate, play in hay, eat well, dance, spot birds, play minigolf, exercise, barbecue, take a train, visit an exhibition, listen to a speech, enjoy drama and laughter – the sort of thing that is so reinvigorating. |
